Imagine the VCAA using the term Algorithmic to describe a new SUPER VCE Mathematics subject! Two years ago we came up with the same name for our course for highly able students. Born to Soar’s Algorithmic course endeavours to challenge students to think of mathematics as a creative discipline where participants are challenged to write mathematical equations in order to describe their thinking. It’s encouraging that Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority chief executive John Firth agrees with our premise of pitching a course at those seeking a “demanding cognitive level” with a focus on a new approach to solving real-world problems.
